Circle of Life

This statue reflects a state of being, the feeling of being alive and aware. And by encapsulating this intelligent awareness, it is also a still life with the constant tension between each of us wanting to connect, to understand each other. Yet we also want to keep our distance and secure our own space.

E. M. Forster summed up this humane quest for compassionate love in his commonly quoted “Only connect”.

The sculpture’s gently circular form turns inward but the ends do not meet. The empty space between these ends becomes the focus of this sculpture: it attracts the eye like a magnet.

This is because we innately want the ends to meet, to become a harmonic whole.

In the same way, we want to commune with those we love, so that by sharing such an empty space, it becomes a living moment between us.
