Covid-19: Tribute to Michelangelo

Anne-Claire found in Michelangelo’s David the inspiration for her poignant work in the Covid-19 times.

The biblical David faced an enormous, apparently invincible enemy. Since Renaissance times, David’s victory has been the symbol of the defense of civil liberties, particularly in the Florentine Republic.

Today we are facing a formidable, apparently invincible enemy that not only threatens our physical well-being but also imposes very strong limitations on our liberties.

On the one hand, we must comply to avoid a health catastrophe, on the other we must be vigilant. We must ensure that the measures now in place do not become permanent!

Anne-Claire thought David’s victory to be an excellent metaphor for our battle and the optimism needed to succeed.

The 3D printed head is made of clay, a natural product and in itself a symbol of Earth, the very basis of our existence. The mask is made of bronze, a man-made material symbolizing human intervention and restrictions.

The result is a stark reminder of the crucial importance of our liberties, the very essence of our culture.

On to a new Renaissance.
